Getting to Koh Phangan: The Complete 2026 Guide
Koh Phangan has no airport. That's part of its charm — the island stays less developed and more authentic than neighbors like Koh Samui. But it also means getting there requires a bit of planning.
Here's every route, with honest timings and prices.

Route 1: Fly to Koh Samui + Ferry (Fastest)
Total time: 2.5-3 hours door-to-door
Cost: 5,000-10,000 THB ($145-290)
1. Fly Bangkok (BKK/DMK) to Koh Samui (USM) — 1 hour. Bangkok Airways has a monopoly on this route, so prices are high (3,500-8,000 THB one-way). Book early for better rates.
2. Taxi to Nathon Pier — 20-30 min from the airport. 300-500 THB.
3. Ferry to Koh Phangan — 30 min. Raja Ferry or Lomprayah. 300-500 THB.
Pro: Fastest and most comfortable.
Con: Expensive. Bangkok Airways charges premium prices.
Route 2: Fly to Surat Thani + Bus/Ferry Combo (Best Value)
Total time: 3.5-5 hours
Cost: 2,500-4,500 THB ($70-130)
1. Fly Bangkok to Surat Thani (URT) — 1 hour. AirAsia, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air. Budget fares from 1,200 THB if booked early.
2. Bus + ferry combo — Pre-booked transfer from Surat Thani airport to Donsak Pier, then high-speed catamaran to Koh Phangan. 2-3 hours total. Lomprayah and Seatran both run this combined ticket.
Pro: Half the cost of the Samui route with only 1-2 extra hours.
Con: More transfers. Bus portion can be slow if traffic is bad.
This is the route we recommend for most visitors.
Route 3: Night Train from Bangkok (The Classic)
Total time: 12-14 hours
Cost: 1,000-2,500 THB ($30-70)
1. Night train from Hua Lamphong or Bang Sue Grand station — Departs around 5-7 PM, arrives Surat Thani around 5-7 AM. Book a sleeper berth (lower berth is better — more space and a window).
2. Bus to Donsak Pier + ferry — Pre-arranged combo ticket from the station, or book separately.
Pro: Romantic, adventurous, incredibly cheap. The sleeper berths are comfortable enough. You save a night's accommodation.
Con: Long. Trains can be delayed. You arrive tired.
Route 4: Night Bus from Bangkok
Total time: 10-12 hours
Cost: 800-1,500 THB ($23-43)
VIP buses depart from Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai) in the evening, arriving in Surat Thani or Donsak the next morning. Combined bus + ferry tickets are available.
Pro: Cheapest option.
Con: Least comfortable. Thai VIP buses have reclining seats but it's still a bus overnight.
Route 5: Ferry from Koh Tao
Total time: 1-2 hours
Cost: 400-800 THB ($12-23)
Lomprayah high-speed catamaran or Seatran Discovery. Multiple daily departures. Easy and scenic.
Pro: Quick and beautiful. Perfect if you're island-hopping.
Con: Rough seas possible October-December. Some people get seasick on the catamaran.
Route 6: Ferry from Koh Samui
Total time: 30 minutes
Cost: 300-500 THB ($9-15)
Multiple daily ferries from Nathon, Maenam, and Big Buddha piers. The most frequent connection in the Gulf.
Getting from the Pier to Villa La Favela
You'll arrive at either Thong Sala Pier (main pier, most ferries) or Haad Rin Pier (some Lomprayah services).
From Thong Sala to Haad Salad: 15 minutes by car.
Options:
- Pre-arranged transfer — We can arrange pickup. Tell us your ferry time when you book. Recommended.
- Songthaew (shared taxi) — 150-300 THB per person. Wait at the pier until it fills up. Runs to all major beaches.
- Private taxi — 300-500 THB. Available at the pier.
- Scooter rental — Available at the pier from 250-350 THB/day. Only recommended if you're experienced riding in Thailand.
Booking Tips
1. Book ferries on 12Go.asia or direct with Lomprayah/Seatran. Avoid random tour agencies that add markups.
2. Book the Samui flight early — Bangkok Airways prices double closer to the date.
3. Don't book the first morning ferry if arriving by train or bus — delays are common and you'll stress about missing it.
4. Bring motion sickness medicine if you're prone to seasickness, especially October-December when seas are rougher.
5. Travel light — you'll be transferring between vehicles. A backpack or soft bag is easier than a hard suitcase.
