Why Koh Phangan Works for Families
Koh Phangan has a reputation as a party island. It's an accurate reputation for one beach (Haad Rin) and completely irrelevant to the rest of the island. The northwest coast — Haad Salad, Haad Yao, Mae Haad — is quiet, safe, and strikingly beautiful. It's one of the best places in Southeast Asia for a family trip where adults want something genuinely luxurious and children need safe swimming and space to move.
A private villa with a pool is not just a comfort upgrade over a hotel. For families, it's a fundamentally different type of trip.
What Makes a Villa Better Than a Hotel for Families
Private pool
No resort pool schedule. No sharing with strangers. No "pool closes at 7 PM." The pool is yours whenever you want it — which for families with young children means exactly when they want to use it.
Kitchen
The ability to make breakfast, feed a picky eater at any time, and store snacks and drinks without paying hotel minibar prices is worth a significant amount over a 7-night stay.
En-suite bathrooms — one per family
The single biggest practical advantage of a well-specified family villa. No queue for the bathroom in the morning. Each family or couple gets their own room and bathroom. This solves the main friction point of multi-family travel.
Space
A 300m² villa with multiple living areas means the adults can have a conversation after the kids are asleep and everyone isn't crowded into one hotel room. The outdoor terrace, the kitchen, the pool area — there's room for everyone.
Privacy
No other hotel guests. No one watching the pool. No awkward elevator conversations. Multi-family trips work better when the group has the property to itself.
What to Look for in a Family Villa in Koh Phangan
En-suite bathrooms (non-negotiable)
Any villa advertising 4 bedrooms should have 4 bathrooms. Check the listing photos — many villas claim 4 bedrooms but have 2 shared bathrooms. For a multi-family or multi-generational group this creates real problems.
Pool size and safety
Minimum 40m² for a group of 6+. Infinity pools are beautiful but the water drops away at the edge — assess whether this is appropriate for young children. A flat-edged pool with a shallow area is safer for small kids.
Ground-floor access
Hillside villas often have dramatic views but require navigating stairs with luggage, prams, or tired children. Check the villa layout — is the pool on the same level as the main living area?
Kitchen quality
Two full kitchens is the gold standard for multi-family bookings. Separate cooking spaces reduce friction during busy mornings.
Location relative to the beach
Haad Salad has calm, shallow water — safer for young children than east-facing beaches that can get choppier. A 5-minute walk to the beach is manageable with young kids. A 20-minute drive is not.
Villa La Favela — The Koh Phangan Family Villa
Villa La Favela in Haad Salad is consistently the top choice for family bookings on the northwest coast.

The infinity pool edge is fenced and the pool is large enough for children to swim freely without being underfoot of adults. The 2 kitchens mean two families can cook simultaneously without getting in each other's way. Haad Salad beach is one of the calmest bays on the island — safe for young children year-round.

Getting There with Kids
The ferry is the only way to reach Koh Phangan. From Koh Samui airport, the Lomprayah catamaran to Koh Phangan takes 30 minutes. From Surat Thani (mainland), the ferry is 2-2.5 hours.
The Lomprayah is air-conditioned and relatively stable. Most children tolerate it fine. If you or your children are prone to sea sickness, take medication in advance — the catamaran can be bouncy in rougher conditions.
Book a private taxi from the Thong Sala ferry pier to Haad Salad (300-400 THB per car). Much easier than a songthaew with luggage and children.
