The Food Lover's Guide to Cooking on Koh Phangan
Koh Phangan's food scene goes far beyond restaurant dining. The island has vibrant night markets where you can eat like a local for under 200 THB, cooking classes where you learn to make the dishes you'll crave for years, and if you're staying at a villa — the freedom to cook with the freshest Thai ingredients money can buy.
The Night Markets
Pantip Night Market — Thong Sala (Every evening)
The locals' market. Open every night from around 5 PM. Here's what to eat:
- Khao man gai (chicken rice) — the stall in the back left corner. 50-60 THB. Arguably the best on the island.
- Som tam (papaya salad) — the vendor near the entrance makes it fresh to order. Specify your spice level: "pet nit noi" (a little spicy) if you're unsure.
- Pad kra pao (holy basil stir-fry) — with a fried egg on top. 50-70 THB. The ultimate Thai comfort food.
- Mango sticky rice — when mangoes are in season (March-June), this is perfection. 60-80 THB.
Saturday Walking Street — Thong Sala
The weekly event. Two blocks transform into a food paradise every Saturday from 5 PM. Strategy: arrive at 5 PM before the crowds. Walk down one side, eat your way back on the other. Budget 300-400 THB for a feast.
Must-try: the rotee (Thai crepe) vendor, the fresh coconut ice cream, and whoever's doing fried chicken that week.
Cooking Classes
C&M Thai Cooking Class
The most recommended on the island. Half-day class includes a market visit in Thong Sala where you learn to identify Thai herbs and ingredients, followed by 4-5 dishes cooked in an open-air kitchen. You'll typically make pad thai, green or red curry, tom yum soup, and a stir-fry of your choice. Around 1,500-2,000 THB per person.
Thai Cooking at Srithanu Cafes
Several wellness-oriented cafes in the yoga village offer shorter cooking workshops focused on healthy Thai and fusion cuisine. More intimate than the bigger operations. Ask locally for current schedules.
Shopping for Ingredients
If you're staying at a villa with a kitchen (Villa La Favela has two), cooking with fresh Thai ingredients is a genuine joy.
Where to shop:
| Market | Best For | When | Distance from Villa |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pantip Market | Produce, meat, seafood | Daily | 12 min |
| Makro | Bulk, imported items | Daily | 15 min |
| Tesco Lotus | Western groceries | Daily | 15 min |
| Chaloklum Fish Market | Morning catch seafood | Morning | 15 min |
| Saturday Walking Street | Ready-to-eat, snacks | Saturday | 12 min |
What to cook at the villa:
- Green curry from scratch — buy curry paste, coconut milk, Thai eggplant, and chicken from Pantip. Total cost: ~150 THB to feed 4 people.
- Fresh seafood BBQ — get prawns and fish from Chaloklum morning market. Grill on the villa terrace at sunset.
- Pad thai for the group — dried noodles, tamarind paste, fish sauce, eggs, and whatever protein you like. A crowd-pleaser for 200 THB total.
- Tropical fruit breakfast — mango, papaya, dragon fruit, passion fruit. Buy a huge bag for 100-200 THB at any market.
Villa La Favela's Kitchen Advantage
Most villas on Koh Phangan have one basic kitchen. Villa La Favela has two fully equipped kitchens — which means multi-family groups or larger parties can cook independently, and you've got double the counter space for ambitious cooking sessions.
We can also arrange a private chef to cook at the villa for special occasions. Thai or international menus, sourced from the morning markets. Ask when you book.
