Koh Phangan in 2026: What's Changed, What Hasn't

Koh Phangan has spent 30 years being defined by one event — the Full Moon Party at Haad Rin. That reputation is both accurate and deeply misleading. Yes, 10,000 people descend on the south beach once a month for a beach rave. No, that is not the whole island.

The rest of Koh Phangan — particularly the northwest coast — is quiet, beautiful, and increasingly well-equipped for travellers who want luxury without the Koh Samui price tag or the Phuket crowds. The villa stock has improved dramatically. The restaurant scene has gone upmarket. And the infrastructure (roads, ferries, fibre WiFi) is now genuinely good.

This guide covers everything you need to plan a trip in 2026 — from when to go and how to get here, to where to stay and what to actually do.

When to Go

Best time: November – April (dry season)

The Gulf of Thailand coast (where most of Koh Phangan's best beaches are located) gets its driest, calmest weather from November through April. Seas are calm, visibility is high for snorkeling, and the northwest coast beaches — Haad Salad, Haad Yao, Mae Haad — are at their most beautiful.

Peak season is December to February, when prices are highest and Haad Rin is busiest. January and February offer the best balance of dry weather and manageable crowds on the northwest coast.

Shoulder season: April – June

April and May are hot and occasionally rainy, but the northwest coast stays mostly dry. This is when you get the best villa rates with near-peak weather. The sea is calm. Crowds are low.

Monsoon: July – October

The Gulf monsoon brings rain and occasional rough seas to the west coast. Not a reason to avoid Koh Phangan entirely — there are many dry days and the island is dramatically green — but swimming at Haad Salad can be inconsistent. East coast beaches (Thong Nai Pan) are calmer during this period.

How to Get to Koh Phangan

There is no airport on Koh Phangan. All arrivals are by ferry.

Fastest route: Fly to Koh Samui → ferry to Koh Phangan

  • Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK) to Koh Samui: ~1h flight (Bangkok Airways)
  • Koh Samui to Koh Phangan: Lomprayah high-speed catamaran, 30 minutes

Total door-to-door from Bangkok: ~4-5 hours.

Budget route: Fly/train to Surat Thani → ferry

  • Bangkok to Surat Thani: overnight train (~10h) or AirAsia/Nok Air (~1h)
  • Surat Thani to Koh Phangan: Raja Ferry or Seatran (2-2.5 hours)

Total: 4-14 hours depending on transport. Significantly cheaper than Samui.

From Koh Tao / Koh Samui

Lomprayah runs between all three islands several times daily. Koh Tao to Koh Phangan is ~1.5 hours. Koh Samui is 30 minutes.

The One Thing Most Visitors Get Wrong

They stay near Haad Rin and think they've seen Koh Phangan.

The Full Moon Party beach is one of the least representative corners of the island. The northwest coast — Haad Salad, Haad Yao, Mae Haad — is quieter, more beautiful, and where the best villas and most of the island's genuine character lives.

If you're staying 5+ nights, base yourself in the northwest and day-trip to other areas. You'll leave with a completely different impression of the island.
