Koh Phangan's Underwater World: A Complete Guide
Most people come to Koh Phangan for the Full Moon Party or the yoga scene. What they don't expect is some of the best diving and snorkeling in the Gulf of Thailand — including a world-class dive site where whale sharks are spotted regularly.
The Best Snorkeling Spots
| Spot | Difficulty | Marine Life | How to Get There | From Villa |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Koh Ma | Easy | Coral, tropical fish | Walk the sandbar at low tide | 10 min drive |
| Haad Khom | Easy | Reef fish, sea urchins | Drive to beach | 15 min |
| Bottle Beach | Moderate | Coral gardens | Longtail boat from Chaloklum | 15 min + boat |
| Haad Salad rocks | Easy | Reef fish, octopus | Walk from Villa La Favela | 5 min walk |
| Haad Yuan | Moderate | Diverse reef life | Boat from Haad Rin | 30 min + boat |
Koh Ma — The Must-Do
Connected to the mainland by a natural sandbar that emerges at low tide, Koh Ma is Koh Phangan's best snorkeling destination. Walk across the sandbar (bring reef shoes — it's rocky), then snorkel around the island's perimeter. You'll see colorful coral, parrotfish, angelfish, and if you're lucky, small reef sharks.
Tip: Check the tide table. Low tide in the morning gives you the best sandbar walk + clear water for snorkeling. Bring your own gear — rental on the beach is limited.
From Villa La Favela: 10 minutes by car or scooter to Mae Haad beach.
Haad Salad — Your Front Door
Don't overlook the snorkeling right at your doorstep. The rocky edges of Haad Salad beach have decent reef life — particularly the left (north) end. You'll spot trigger fish, parrotfish, and occasionally octopus hiding in the rocks. Not world-class, but perfect for a morning swim before breakfast.
Scuba Diving
Sail Rock — The Crown Jewel
Sail Rock (Hin Bai) is consistently ranked among the top 5 dive sites in the Gulf of Thailand. A massive underwater pinnacle rising from 40m depth to 15m above the surface, it attracts huge schools of fish, barracuda, batfish, and between March and September — whale sharks.
The "chimney" is the highlight: a vertical swim-through inside the rock from 19m to 5m. Even experienced divers find it thrilling.
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Depth | 5-40m |
| Visibility | 10-30m (best March-September) |
| Difficulty | Intermediate (Open Water certified minimum) |
| Best season | March-September for whale sharks |
| Cost | 3,500-5,000 THB for 2-dive trip |
| Travel time | ~1.5 hrs by dive boat from Thong Sala |

Freediving
Koh Phangan has become a global freediving destination. The calm, warm waters of the Gulf make it ideal for training, and several schools offer courses from beginner to instructor level.
Apnea Koh Phangan and Blue Immersion are the most respected schools. A 3-day AIDA Level 2 course starts from around 8,000-10,000 THB and you'll learn to freedive to 15-20 meters on a single breath.
Night Snorkeling & Bioluminescence
Between July and November, certain beaches on the east coast glow with bioluminescent plankton at night. Walk into the water and every movement creates blue-green sparks of light. It's one of the most magical natural experiences on the island.
Best spots: Haad Khom, Haad Yuan, sometimes Bottle Beach. You need a dark night (no moon is best) and the right plankton conditions — ask locals if it's happening.
After the Dive
Return to Villa La Favela and rinse off in the infinity pool overlooking the Gulf. The same water you were just diving in, now viewed from 60m² of pool with a sunset cocktail. The villa's location in Haad Salad puts you within 10-15 minutes of most dive departure points.
