Beyond the Full Moon Party: 25 Real Things to Do in Koh Phangan

The Full Moon Party gets all the headlines. But Koh Phangan has 25+ experiences that have nothing to do with a beach rave — world-class diving, hidden beaches accessible only by boat, jungle waterfalls, and some of the best sunsets in Southeast Asia.

Here are the 25 best things to do in Koh Phangan, organised by type.

Beaches & Water

1. Snorkel at Haad Salad with sea turtles

The rocky headlands on the south end of Haad Salad bay are home to a resident sea turtle population. Early morning (7-10 AM) gives you the best visibility and the highest turtle activity. Bring your own mask and fins — the bay is short walk from Villa La Favela.

2. Walk the Mae Haad sandbar to Koh Ma island

At low tide, a sandbar extends 100+ metres from Mae Haad beach and connects to Koh Ma, a small uninhabited island. You can walk out into the sea with water at knee height and look back at the island. One of the most photogenic moments in the Gulf of Thailand.

Tip: Check tide times before you go. The sandbar disappears at high tide.

3. Take a longtail boat to Bottle Beach

Haad Khuat (Bottle Beach) is only reachable by boat or a steep 45-minute jungle trail. The longtail from Chaloklum takes about 10 minutes and costs around 150 THB each way. Dramatic jungle backdrop, crystal-clear water, very few people. One of the most beautiful beaches in the Gulf.

4. Find bioluminescent plankton (July–November)

Between July and November, dinoflagellate plankton cause the water to glow blue-green when disturbed. Walk into the sea at night and every movement creates sparks of light. Best spots: Haad Khom and Haad Yuan on the east coast. You need a moonless night and calm conditions — ask locals if it's active.

5. Night swim at Secret Beach (Haad Son)

Secret Beach is a small sheltered cove about 5 minutes from Haad Salad by road. Beautiful at any time, but particularly atmospheric at night when it's usually deserted. The water is calm and warm year-round on this stretch of coast.

6. Kayak the northwest coast headlands

Several operators near Haad Yao rent single and double kayaks. The northwest coast has rocky headlands, sea caves, and small coves that are only accessible by water. Best in the morning when the sea is glassiest.

Diving & Water Sports

7. Dive Sail Rock

Sail Rock is a granite pinnacle 30 minutes offshore and one of the top dive sites in the Gulf of Thailand. Famous for the "chimney" — a vertical swim-through in the rock. Whale sharks are occasionally sighted. Operators run day trips from Haad Salad, Haad Yao, and Thong Sala.

8. Snorkel Koh Ma reef

The reef on the north side of Koh Ma island has good hard coral coverage and plenty of marine life. Accessible by longtail from Mae Haad (5 minutes). Shallower and calmer than Sail Rock — good for non-divers.

9. Take a PADI Open Water course

Koh Phangan has multiple DIVE NCA-accredited schools. A 3-4 day PADI Open Water course costs around 10,000-12,000 THB. The calm, warm Gulf water makes it ideal for first-time divers.

10. Try freediving

Apnea Koh Phangan and Blue Immersion run AIDA freediving courses. A 3-day AIDA Level 2 course (target depth: 15-20m on a single breath) costs around 8,000-10,000 THB. World-class instructors, near-perfect conditions.

Food & Markets

11. Pantip Night Market, Thong Sala

The best locals' food market on the island. Open every evening from around 5 PM. Get khao man gai (chicken rice), som tam (papaya salad), and mango sticky rice when in season. Budget 100-200 THB for a full meal. Full food guide.

12. Saturday Walking Street, Thong Sala

Every Saturday evening, two blocks of Thong Sala become a street food market. Rotee (Thai crepes), fresh coconut ice cream, fried chicken, and dozens of other vendors. Arrive at 5 PM before the crowds.

13. Dinner at DAO Restaurant

The most ambitious food on the island. DAO runs a 10-course tasting menu with locally sourced ingredients and a wine pairing option. Reservation required well in advance. Not cheap, but a genuine fine-dining experience.

14. Thai cooking class

C&M Thai Cooking Class is the most recommended on the island. Half-day format — market visit in Thong Sala, then 4-5 dishes cooked in an open-air kitchen. You'll make pad thai, green curry, and tom yum. Around 1,500-2,000 THB. Full cooking guide.

15. Fresh seafood at Chaloklum pier

Chaloklum is a working Thai fishing village on the north coast. Several simple restaurants by the pier serve the morning's catch at very reasonable prices. The grilled whole fish and pad cha (stir-fried seafood with wild ginger) are excellent.

Wellness & Yoga

16. Join a yoga retreat in Srithanu

Srithanu on the west coast is the wellness capital of the island. Wonderland Healing Center, Orion Healing, and Samma Karuna all run week-long retreats combining yoga, meditation, and detox. Full wellness guide.

17. Sound healing session

Multiple studios in Srithanu offer group sound bath sessions with Tibetan singing bowls, gongs, and crystal bowls. 300-600 THB for a 90-minute session.

18. Dome Sauna cold plunge

Dome Sauna in Srithanu has wood-fired saunas, cold plunge pools, and a small café. Popular with the wellness crowd and an interesting cultural experience. Around 350 THB for a session.

Nature & Exploration

19. Trek to Than Sadet Waterfall

Than Sadet National Park in the east of the island has a series of waterfalls with natural pools for swimming. The falls were visited by several Thai kings — there are royal carvings on the rocks. Best visited during or after the rainy season when water levels are higher.

20. Drive the coast road

Rent a scooter and ride the coastal road from Thong Sala north through Haad Salad, Haad Yao, Mae Haad, and up to Chaloklum. Takes about 45 minutes without stops and passes the most scenic parts of the northwest coast. Best in the late afternoon for the light.

21. Explore Chaloklum fishing village

Beyond the restaurants, Chaloklum has a working pier with daily fishing boats, a small temple, and a very different pace from the tourist areas. Walking around early morning when the boats come in is a genuine slice of Thai island life.

Nightlife & Culture

22. Full Moon Party at Haad Rin

The original. 10,000+ people, beach bars running the full length of Haad Rin, fire shows, multiple sound systems. Happens on the full moon every month. Plan your trip around the date if it matters to you, or plan to avoid it if it doesn't. Accommodation near the Full Moon Party.

23. Jungle Experience (Half Moon Party)

Happens on the half moon, in the jungle above the island. Smaller, darker, and more underground than the Full Moon Party. Terrace stages cut into the hillside. Full music guide.

24. Shiva Moon / Eden Garden

Weekly beach club events on the northwest coast. Shiva Moon is the most scenic — a cliff-top venue with views across the Gulf. Eden Garden tends toward deeper electronic music.

25. Sunrise at Thong Nai Pan Noi

The east coast faces the sunrise. Thong Nai Pan Noi is a long, beautiful bay with very few visitors early in the morning. The drive from the northwest coast takes about 30-40 minutes — worth it for the road alone (mountain pass with island views) as well as the beach.

Base Camp: Villa La Favela, Haad Salad

For activities 1-6 and 20-21, Haad Salad is the ideal base. Villa La Favela is 5 minutes walk from the beach, 10-15 minutes from Thong Sala, and centrally located for day trips across the island.
